Week 35, Day 251, December 30, 2009, Looking South

Today I had the pleasure of visiting a good friends house.  There house is incredible.  Its at the end of a road bordering on a State Forest.  They have 2 ponds, and a beautiful house that they built themselves.

In this photo we are looking over a bench looking over a firepit, looking over a doc, looking over a pond, that looks to the south.  It's a great pond for swimming, but it would have been a little cold today.

Lessons Learned:
  • Snow continues to be difficult to photograph.  I need to continue to work on this.
Photo details: Exposure time 1/80 sec, Aperture f/18.0, ISO 100, Focal Length 28 mm, Lens Canon EF 17-40mm, tripod.

Ah, beauty. The two resounding objects in the foreground lead me right through the arch, and into the frozen lake and sunset. Perfect composition!

I think you did well with this one. I'm thinking that snow constrain the exposure latitude. Got to get it perfect on for the picture to look right. And this one looks right.

This is a beautiful picture. I know what you mean about snow, but I feel like you captured it well here. I think it works best when a sunrise/sunset actually casts a glow on it like the slight pink/purple in this. Then it isn't overly white or drab gray. The composition here is fantastic as well.

Actually looking again, it's more golden than pink/purple. I must be color blind tonight. Either way you can catch the glow off the setting sun in the snow. :)

I liked your composition and it looks like nice place to live.

When it comes to a photo with lots of snow, one must usually overexpose with a stop or two.

Happy New Year!

Thank you for your comments on my posts, and I too have enjoyed visiting your blog. You were the person that had originally inspired me to do a daily photo blog - I saw you were featured on DPS, and became instantly inspired. I will continue to post, maybe with a slightly different format for 2010, but I will click until I can't click anymore :) Have a healthy and peaceful new year!

You know, I really like this one. The composition is so pastoral, and it leads your eye right where you want it to go without any specific "hard lines."

Apparently snow is quite difficult to photograph. When your lightmeter says your exposure is correct, the snow tends to get somewhat washed out. Which leads me to believe that HDR could be a good option here. I think I'll give that a try sometime.

Thanks for your comments on my blog, and for inspiring me to get a post up every day. Here's to a new year of successful photography!
