Week 52, Day 265, April 29, 2010, "What is it?"

A while ago Andrew Broekhuijsen posted a photo, and asked his readers to guess the subject.  When I saw this photo, I thought I would do the same.

Any guesses?

Lessons Learned:
  • Cameras can see things in ways that the eye cannot.
Photo details: Exposure time 1/80 sec, Aperture f/4.0, ISO 400, Focal Length 40 mm, Lens Canon EF 17-40mm, hand held.

My initial thought was, "brick wall". But upon closer inspection, I have no idea whatsoever!

Hint?

Sorry, I don't have a clue... but it is an interesting texture. Is it some kind of foam insulation?

It looks like something that's been burned. Maybe some kind of wood?

it is a close-up, of that I am certain. But of what... hrm. A chalk board eraser?

Sally is very close. It's the rings of an old Elm tree that was cut down. It's been decaying in the woods for about 20 years. Although it hasn't been burned, just decaying.
