Week 17, Day 115, August 24, 2009 "Corn Field Part II"

This is my second attempt at this photo. I do like how this one turned out. It looks as if there is a long tunnel.

It's amazing how dark it is in a corn field with all the leaves above my head. So far I have been unable to create a blue sky so far because it is so dark. Maybe some of you photographers would have some suggestions. I may try some HDR processing in the future. At this time, I don't know how to produce an HDR image and then add it to the blog. Do any of you?

Lessons Learned:
  • This time I used an row of corn planted in an East - West direction instead of a North - South. At first I shot toward the sun, but after some attempts I realized that shooting away from the sun was working much better. I think that using an East - West direction gave me a little more light to create a better photo.
  • Take an extra battery. My battery died, and my second one was back at the house.
Photo details: Exposure time 2.5 sec, Aperture f/22.0, ISO 800 (it was a very dark under the leaves), Focal Length 29 mm, 35 mm equivalent focal length 47mm, Lens Canon EF 17-40mm, camera bag as a tripod.

It does indeed look like a tunnel. Very well caught. I don't think HDR will do much here, since you don't have a large dynamic range in this picture as far as I can see. Photoshop will do HDR, but is not very good at it. I have used a program called Photomatrix which is better. In this case I would play a bit around with the saturation and luminosity for the green and yellow colours in RAW-converter. Maybe that will increase the contrast a bit. Fist suggestion is darker green and lighter yellow.

PS Thank you for the comment - photo is actually spelt "foto" in Norwegian...

I received one comment off line that this photo was creepy. Sometimes I like creepy. One thing that is interesting. Click on the image. This should open up a higher resolution of the image. Look on the lower right side. It looks like a doll, or a face looking at the camera. I'm not sure what it was, but it's interesting.

ooo I like this one! I thought the first one was cool and this one definitely took it up a notch! Nice work!

A friend of mine is coding some HDR algorithms for fun (he's a world expert on error correcting codes at JPL) and some day... some day I will test drive his software ;) I'll let you know if it ever happens. I think this photograph is fantastic for the symmetry and the structure and the way it leads the eye. Would be neat if you camped out nearby (not sure if that's possible) and did a nighttime exposure for extra creepiness! Gold mine here. Great job.

Yes ~ diferent ~ jungle like... how about trying it with infra red and a red filter? Can be done digitally but you need an old digital camera and a bit of tweaking with filters etc, alternatively just try a red filter it will make the blue darker and to some extent the green.
